Irresponsible mining practices at the Summitville mine contaminates the Alamosa River with cyanide and toxic metals. The extent of the pollution was so dire that the river was designated a Superfund site. The Alamosa Riverkeepers forms shortly after the incident to improve the water quality and the ecological functionality of the Alamosa River.
